A downtown Edmonton office tower – HSBC Place – has won a significant international building excellence award. The Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY®) award, presented at the international level by Building Owners and Managers Association International (BOMA International), is the most prestigious and comprehensive program of its kind in the commercial real estate industry recognizing quality in buildings and rewarding excellence in building management. Judging is based on building standards, community impact, tenant relations, energy conservation, environmental, regulatory and sustainability, emergency preparedness & security standards and the training of building personnel.
HSBC Place, located at 10250 101 Street, and managed by Epic Investment Services and owned by Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo), won in the 250,000 to 499,999 square feet category. The tower beat out buildings from Chicago, Mexico City, Boston, and other major North American cities. HSBC Place had to first win BOMA Edmonton and BOMA Canada TOBY awards to compete at the 2023 BOMA International Conference and Expo in Kansas City. Canadian buildings competing in other categories were from the Greater Toronto Area.
The Edmonton win in Kansas City marks the first time since 2003 that a building from the city has won an international TOBY, and the first time since 1991 that an Edmonton office tower has received the honour. HSBC Place completed a renovation in 2019 that reimagined emission reduction, tenant comfort, and building performance.
“HSBC Place’s winning the BOMA International TOBY Award reflects that the building truly is best in class – and that the management team from Epic Investment Services and the ownership team from AIMCo can’t be beat, even on the global stage. The win also shows that Edmonton, which in September will host BOMA Canada’s annual conference, BOMEX, in partnership with BOMA Edmonton, has commercial real estate that is the equal to any on the face of the planet.” – Benjamin Shinewald, President and CEO, BOMA Canada
“This was 100% a team effort. I thank each person who had a hand in making HSBC Place a BOMA International TOBY winner. We work hard to have the best building for our tenants, and we share this award with them, and with the rest of the city.” – Kevin Humprhys, Vice President, Real Estate Management, Epic Investment Services
“Taking the stage with BOMA Edmonton members from Epic Investment Services and AIMCo was a great honour. The esteemed BOMA International TOBY Award signals to entrepreneurs, businesses, and investors that Edmonton is home to world-class infrastructure, and that our industry is committed to downtown revitalization. We are excited that HSBC Place will be one of the outstanding buildings on tour in September for BOMEX.” – Lisa Baroldi, President and CEO, BOMA Edmonton
